Fasting in English means to abstain from food or certain kinds of food or certain types of food voluntarily, as an observance of a holy day or as a token of grief, sorrow or repentance.

Fasting has been part of religions of previous nations in the hope that people might become ever conscious of God.

In Hinduism, fasting in Sanskrit is called Upavaasa (which means staying close to the Lord). Devout Hindus observe fasting on special occasions as a mark of respect for their faith, or as a part of their expression of repentance for having done wrong. For example, Karva Chauth is a one-day festival celebrated by Hindu women in India, in which married women fast from Sunrise to Moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands.

For the Jews, Yom Kippur “Day of Atonement” it is forbidden on that day to eat, drink, wash, wear leather or have sexual relations.  The prophet Moses is recorded in the Torah to have fasted “And he was there with the Lord forty days and 40 nights, he neither ate bread nor drank water.” (Exodus 34:28)

For Catholics among Christians, Lent is the major season of fasting, initiative of the forty-day fast of Jesus is recorded in the Gospels to have fasted like Moses. “And he fasted 40 days and 40 nights, and afterward he was hungry.” (Mathew 4:2 & Luke 4:2)

Lent is a period of preparation and reflection, Beginning on Ash Wednesday, before Easter celebrations. By observing the forty days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for forty days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from festivities and food.#

For Muslims, the ultimate goal of fasting is to attain consciousness of God; and their fasting is intended to educate in spirituality, humility and patience. It is time to cleanse the soul, focus attention on God and put into practice selflessness as well as participating in anything that is ill-natured or excessive from dawn until the sun sets.

Muslims did not invent fasting, historically, fasting had been prescribed to previous nations.  In the Quran, it is written “O you who believe! Fasting has been ordained upon you as it was ordained upon those before you, in the hope that you might become ever conscious of God”. Therefore, Muslims believe that previous prophets would have fasted during the month of Ramadan in timing and rituals.

Muslims fast, each day during this month of Ramadan (the name of the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar), just like Jesus recommended his disciples fast on specific days as in “then they will fast in those days.” (Luke 5:35)

Muslims abstain from eating and drinking, for 30 days, similar to what is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke, i.e. Jesus in those days did not eat anything; He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry (Luke 4:2). Afterwards, the follower of Jesus fasted “they had fasted and prayed” (Acts 13:3).  Muslims believe that they are also followers of Jesus and they fast and pray, together, just like the followers of Jesus did “prayed with fasting” (Act 14:23).

Whatever the religion, by fasting people believe that they become more sympathetic to those less fortunate than themselves, as they can feel what it is like to go without food or drink. In turn, this should cause us to be more generous and seek to alleviate hunger among the poor.  It also helps to bring us together with family, friends, and neighbours as we break our fasts together.  It brings us closer as a community and to God by offering more worship.
