Woodwork Dust

Wood Dust in the Woodworking Industry

Wood Dust: All manufacturing industries, including the woodworking sector, have workplace hazards. It may be obvious that fire, in the woodworking industry, is a major risk. Did you know that besides fire, caused by burning wood, there are other major risks; such as the health & safety risk, from inhaling wood dust, which is explained later.

And perhaps, the most dangerous risk, for the woodworking industry, is the risk of having multiple explosions; from wood dust! The various processes involved in cutting, turning, sanding wood leads to the creation of large volumes of dust; wood dust, mixed with air, is the main ingredient for single and multiple explosions. Explosions caused by dust are marked problems for the safety of workers and their workplaces.

Some Common Wood Dust Hazards

Inhaling Dust Hazard:

Inhaling Wood Dust
Inhaling Wood Dust

Inhaling toxic dust wood dust particles, suspended in air, can not be ignored; these dust particles are liable to a plethora of health issues:

As per HSE (Health and Safety Executive) Wood Dust regulations, Both hardwood and softwood dust particles have a Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) of 5mg/m3 which must not be exceeded. These are limits, placed on the amount of dust in the air, averaged over an eight-hour working day. However, you must reduce exposure to wood dust to as low as ‘reasonably practicable. Anything more and woodworkers are at risk of reduced visibility, cancer (particularly of the nose), lung damage, asthma and other health effects like prolonged colds, allergic reactions and dermatitis!

The Explosion Hazard:

Wood dust build-up, in the absence of an effective suction and ventilation system, is prone to be blown around. The resulting clouds of dust, when introduced with a strong spark, can combust resulting in explosions; causing significant loss of assets, property and life.

The Masterflex Ducting Hose Solution

Ducting hoses, used with exhaust or vacuum systems, is a common way of extracting wood dust in woodworking areas. However, most ducting hoses, although being abrasion-resistant, tend to be thick, heavy and ridged; taking up valuable space.  Moreover, the cheaper corrugated hoses, which are liable to get wood dust lodged in its groves, reduces the efficiency to collect and dispose of dust particles. Furthermore, some, quality Masterflex Hoses, are even resistant to being crushed; as described below!

The Masterflex Solutions – The PUR L Trivolution, Flamex B-Fse & Master PUR Step Wood Dust Hoses

Masterflex hoses, engineered explicitly for dust collection, are alternative to traditional dust collection ducting hoses:

The Masterflex PUR L Trivolution Hose, a flexible lightweight ducting hose, has a smoother bore in comparison and thicker wall than traditional hoses; making it an excellent solution for dust extraction. PUR L hose, possessing excellent tear strength, is reinforced with a copper wire helix; this copper wire helix gives this ducting hose high durability and flexibility with superior tear strength.

Master-PUR L Trivolution Hose

While the Flamex B-Fse, our most popular dust removal applications, could be, depending on application requirements, the most cost-effective solution for transporting dust.

And last but not least, the Master PUR Step great, for dust extraction, where the hose may be subjected to accidental crushing.
